My sister, Grace, was diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma in July of 2018, a week later we visited Durdle Door beach. Between pandemic lockdowns and medical requirements, the beach was often the best escape for Grace, it became her favourite place. Grace passed away in November of 2020. The project revisits the coasts Gaskell visited with his sister and family as she fought her brain tumour.

Banal large-scale prints allude to the sublime. A focus on time is presented by a continuous horizon line. Three instant emulsion lift photographs tail the coastal images, their fragility an acknowledgement of the memories they hold and their materiality a link to family photography. Saltwater from the exposure sites is incorporated into the image processing, introducing a sense of place into the landscapes. Produced during 2021 and 2022, My Sister, Grace. provides a third-party observation in memorandum, exploring themes of landscape and memory.
